Анотація
У статті проаналізовано теорію ідеалізованих когнітивних моделей (ІКМ) Дж. Лакоффа у світлі сучасних підходів до мовної категоризації. Розглянуто позитивні здобутки теорії та її слабкі місця. Дослідник обґрунтовано заперечує проти уречевлення прототипів і ставить в центр уваги прототипові ефекти. Показано, що поняття ІКМ є «парасольковим терміном» із розмитим значенням. Теорія ІКМ не узгоджується з постулатом про примат вжитку – підвалиною парадигми когнітивної лінгвістики, а проте пропонує перспективні наукові конструкти: внутрішні й зовнішні прототипові ефекти, радіальна структура категорії тощо.
(The article analyzes George Lakoff’s theory of Idealized Cognitive Models (ICMs) in the light of contemporary approaches to linguistic categorization. The author considers the positive achievements of the theory and its weaknesses. The ICM theory is a kind of theory-theory of categorization in which ICMs are chunks of knowledge (theories) about the world. Lakoff has a wellreasoned
case against the reification of prototypes and chooses to put prototype effects in the focus of his attention. He warns against equating: a) effects and structure and b) prototypes and representations. The article shows that the concept of ICMs is an umbrella term with vague meaning. It encompasses a number of known cognitive models and may serve as the conceptual underpinning of a number of different linguistic units. Two prominent examples (the categories bachelor and mother) on which the ICM theory is built are subjected to analysis. Critical remarks from literature and the author’s own observations are brought to bear on the validity of the ICM theory with respect to these cases of categorization. While the ICM theory needs to be reconciled
with the usage-based thesis of the cognitive linguistics paradigm, in its present state it still offers some promising constructs, such as internal and external prototype effects, radial category structure, etc., which warrant further research and elaboration.)
