(The article deals with the premises of a philosophical interpretation of testimony based on the Greek word μαρτυρία. Born as a juridical concept, testimony was conceptualized as a special form of providing information to the court based on the criteria of truth, credibility and imputability. On the other hand, testimony was an important criterion for authenticating a witness as a citizen of a polis: not only did he have to meet specific social criteria (he had to be a free male citizen of age), but he was also called to maintain and affirm the order of the polis life. Therefore, the juridical
procedure insisted on the understanding of testimony as a form of selectivity because it required the criteria that characterized his social status. Meanwhile personal characteristics of an individual were factured out.
A possibility for a philosophical analysis appears when we declare that the juridical connotation of testimony does not grasp the complexity of this phenomenon. The figure of Socrates helps to substantiate this statement. The event of his encounter with an interlocutor transforms the common understanding of testimony: it ceases to be a kind of a passive, disinterested position and becomes a form of participation in the event of searching the truth. In the foreground comes a deep intrinsic connection between the meaning of the expression and the subject to whom it belongs. Thus, a
witness here is not an external figure, not just a source of information, but above all a constitutive element of the phenomenon of truth, he is deeply involved into the truth.)
