(This paper examines the city as an important centre of the formation and deployment of social space. Urban social space
is multi-layered, combining tradition/innovation, past/present, centre/periphery, «ours»/»theirs», sacred (intemporal)/profane (temporal). An attempt is made to demonstrate that, within the framework of Joseph Beuys’ concept of social sculpture, visual culture and art acquire social agency, becoming instrumental in bringing about changes, with the artist becoming a cultural agent of such changes. Among the areas of Ukrainian mainstream visual culture are sculpture, installation, street art, performance, flash mob, art objects, and interactive multimedia art projects. Analysed is the interaction of «past/modern» concepts within urban social space, which becomes particularly evident in historical monuments. Those provide social balance and social cohesion and serve as a mental support that promotes continuity of cultural dialogue between epochs.
Such role is played by historically marked monuments, for example, the Victims of the Holodomor or Shevchenko memorials.
On the other hand, the city, as a manifestation of the present and a project of the future, creates social space with the use of latest art projects (e.g. by Viktor Sydorenko and Zhanna Kadyrova). The paper further focuses on a manifestation of the heterogeneity of urban social space through the interaction of the concept of «ours/theirs». The city is a place of a creative meeting of different peoples and cultures. Here multiculturalism and dialogicality are prevalent. Visual culture makes it possible to combine national and historically marked (ours) and extracultural (theirs) phenomena. A case is made to show that
relevant art contributes to the formation and consolidation of the sense of citizenship, belonging to the urban community, and responsibility before it. The projects by Oksana Chepelyk dedicated to the Chernobyl disaster, continuity of generations, the lot of those who neglect their heritage and history, or threats to life on Earth are particularly important.)
