Abstract
У статті розглянуто проблему гендерної диференціації
праці, гендерного розподілу основних господарських функцій
та відповідальності в селянських родинах Подільської губернії
наприкінці ХІХ – на початку ХХ століття (This article represents a historical study of gender differentiation
of
labor,
principal
economic
functions
and
responsibilities
in
farms in Podolia governorate in the late 19th and early 20th
centuries. The peculiarities of gender socialization receive special
attention. This study describes the types of gender-differentiated
works, shows husband-wife day-to-day interaction within the
peasant family farm. The article contains examples of violations of
gender division of labor, that was possible mainly in exceptional
circumstances, such as serious illness or death of husband or wife.
The study focuses on the traditional notions of women’s work and
men’s work as an essential part of peasantry’s worldview. Historical
facts
of
gender
differentiation
of
labor
in
farms,
according
to
the
characteristic
patterns
of
all
European
nations,
are
examined
in
depth.
Men
did
physically
heavier
work
with
the
use
of
sophisticated
tools
and
mechanisms,
their
actions
are
more
focused
on
regional
trade. Women mainly engaged in domestic work, cultivating
gardens, delicate, artistic and monotonous type of work.
The study reveals socio-economic context of a peasant woman’s
life. The specific features of social role of housewife is studied in
detail. Based upon unbiased analysis of archival documents and
the local press publications this article contributes to a more accurate
and
thorough
understanding
of
the
Ukrainian
popular
notion
of
womanhood,
as
well
as
the
diversity
in
a
woman’s
status
in a peasant family and the rural community)
