Abstract

(Modern culture of «forbidden death» places a dying at the edge of social consciousness.
Today people do not want to hear and remember about death. This is one of the reasons because of which state of burial culture is unsatisfactory. So, measures that would contribute to the maintenance of the funeral culture at the proper level are badly needed. One of these measures could be the implementation of relevant thematic studies, special courses in educational institutions. The preparation of the
materials for these programs needs to consider various ways of burial, traditions of caring for the graves. It’s need to analyze rituals that were known throughout history and which are practiced now.
Another aim of the article is a division of burial process into stages. There is a known interpretation of burial as one of the «rites of passage» like a birth, puberty
or marriage. It’s used in the article as a starting point. Then it considers the burial customs of different cultural regions. Here it examines Muslim, Far Eastern and
African rituals.
The review reveals that burial can be split into following stages: 1) Preparatory (it contains everything that occurs «before cemetery»), 2) Interment (everything that takes a place in the cemetery), 3) Memorial (everything that is done «after the cemetery»). This division bases on «empirical», «formal» characteristic, rather than intentional one (change of ontological or social status).Today dying man more and more often spends the last days and hours in not comfortable environment. Far from his friends and relatives, but alone or surrounded by indifferent medical staff. So, the preparatory phase of burial should not be started
only after ascertaining death. The first stage has to include the establishment of friendly, sympathetic space around the person who is dying. It’s very important to
create an appropriate psychological microclimate in such situation. We must take care not only about the body of the deceased, but also provide a person the opportunity
to die like a human beings. Thus it would be reasonable to combine the efforts of funeral services, volunteers, hospice movements to help any man to meet death in the worthy way.)
