Abstract

Предметом вивчення в статті є особливості застосування виражальних засобів мови в композиційно-мовленнєвій формі портретного опису в романі Дж. Голсуорсі «Власник». У результаті лінгвостилістичного аналізу фрагментів опису зовнішності літературних героїв з’ясовано кількісні та якісні параметри використання письменникомтропів для створення художньо-образної характеристики зовнішнього вигляду персонажів у першій частині трилогії «Сага про Форсайтів». (The paper deals with the study of language peculiarities of narrative compositional forms, specifically the use of lexical stylistic devices in characters’ portrait descriptions in fiction. The research was conducted on the material of the first novel of the Forsyte Saga – «The Man of Property», written by the pre-eminent British writer J. Galsworthy. Portrait descriptions are interpreted in the given work as the portrayals of the characters’ appearance, age, built, clothes and of other features that produce their visual images. The literary analysis of the novel revealed quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the lexical stylistic devices employed by the author in the portrait descriptions. It was determined that the most frequently used stylistic device in the novel was epithet, with the help of which the author gave expressive and evaluative portrayals of characters. J. Galsworthy made use of both affective and figurative epithets as well as of their different structural patterns. Less frequently the author employed original and trite metaphors and similes to depict the appearance of the literary heroes. The other lexical literary means – metonymy, zeugma, hyperbole and paraphrase were seldom used in portrait descriptions although they also assisted in building up the vivid images of the characters’ appearances in the novel.)
