Анотація
Предметом вивчення в статті є мовні особливості портретних описів персонажів у англійській художній прозі
19 століття. Автором проаналізовано як за допомогою використання різних мовних засобів письменники вирізняють
прикметні ознаки зовнішності літературних героїв, неодноразово повторюючи їх в описових фрагментах у тексті
твору. Рекурентність домінантних ознак зовнішності героїв сприяє створенню їх цілісного образу.
(The paper deals with the recurrence of dominant features in characters’ portrait descriptions in the English prose fiction of the 19th century. The research was conducted on the material of two novels of the Victorian period in the history of the English literature – «Wuthering Heights» and «Jane Eyre» by Emily Brontë and Charlotte Brontë. The problem of portrait descriptions in the stated literary period as well as the repetition of definite properties in characters’ portrayals, their influence on the creation of heroes’ images have not been studied in detail by scholars yet.
The author of the research analyses language means used in the description of physical appearance of fictional characters in the aforementioned literary works and singles out those peculiarities in their aspect that were repeatedly accentuated by the writers, providing the relevant statistical data. These peculiarities are viewed as dominant ones. Various language means
employed by the novelists to distinguish dominant features of characters’ appearance fall into 5 groups. They are: recurrence of the same lexemes, use of complete and partial synonyms, use of contextual synonyms, use of derived words, and the usage of descriptive language structures to render the similar content. Repetition of certain properties in the characters’ aspect
contributes to the creation of their entire image.)
