Анотація
У статті розглядаються особливості перекладу балади Й. Ґете «Der Erlkönig» («Вільшаний король») грецькими
поетами і перекладачами. Звертається увага на адекватність перекладу та лексичні засоби, які використовують перекладачі.
(Goethe’s oeuvre has always been attracting attention of poets and translators and each translator’s version is different.
It primarily depends on the outlook of the translator, their source and target language competence, the epoch when they lived
and worked.
This article analyzes features of translations of Goethe’s ballad «Der Erlkönig» by Greek poets and translators Arsenis Herondykos and Pavlos A. Dimas. Attention is drawn to the appropriateness of the translations and lexical means used by
the translators.
The story of «Der Erlkönig», written in 1792, derives from the traditional Danish ballad. A father and his young son are riding home through a dark forest. The sick child is being courted by Erlkönig, who three times offers him all sorts of gifts, but his father three times manages to calm the boy. The end of this story is terrible: the boy dies and his soul is seized by the
creepy forest king.
The Modern Greek translations by A. Herondykos and P. A. Dimas were contiguously published in anthologies of foreign poetry (1976 and 1977 respectively). However the differences between the two translations are essential. In addition to changing the size of the work, the Greek poets translated the title of the poem in different ways, thus narrowing the meaning of the supernatural king character.
There are also differences in conveying the symbolic images found in the poem (fog, wind, willow, alder, etc.) by the means of Modern Greek language.
Thereby, Greek poets A. Herondykos and P.A. Dimas succeeded in translating the ballad «Der Erlkönig» by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. They managed to keep and skillfully convey the plot and the integrity of the lyrical images in all their literary elements.)
