Анотація

У статті схарактеризовано звуження (спеціалізацію) значення загальновживаних слів як один із продуктивних різновидів семантичних трансформацій у термінотворенні в галузі водного господарства. Терміни, утворені шляхом звуження семантики, виявляють високу стабільність на різних етапах формування і розвитку термінологічної системи.
(The article deals with the semantic narrowing (or specialization) of common words as the productive varieties of semantic transformations in term-building. The research is performed on the basis of the Ukrainian
terminology of water management.
Terminology concerns narrowing (or specialization) of meaning to be a way of term-building, i. e., a common
word gets a narrow terminological meaning, so that the semantics of this word is limited and its polysemy
is eliminated. Although all the main differential features of two notions are the same, but the special notion in the terminological system also possesses some other distinguishing features. These features are relevant to this notion and are absent in the common word, e.g.: ставок, озеро, болото. Terminological meaning typically evolves from both specific subject meanings (дно, джерело) and generalized abstract meanings (втрата, рівень).
Common and distinguishing features can be clearly revealed by the means of comparative analysis of
definitions of common words and word-terms. Specific features are not formally expressed in the one-word
terms (вода, мул, смуга, борозна, пісок). In multi-word terms, the dependent component appears to contain
the particular feature of the special notion, which restricts the meaning of the term compared to the common
word: абразійний берег, акумулятивне озеро, зарегульована річка.
After becoming a part of terminological system, semantically narrowed terms do not cease to be common
words. As a result, words do not fall into homonyms, but become polysemantic in terms of national language.
Terms derived by semantic narrowing tend to show higher stability at different stages of the formation and the
development of the terminological system. After becoming a part of the terminological system at the early stage
of its development, they keep being a part of it nowadays, too. Certain semantic modifications of some of them only confirm their terminological stability and ability to meet the needs of professional communication effectively.)
