Abstract
The article is devoted to the research of historical development of international volunteer movement. Different approaches to determination of the term “volunteer” are presented in the article. It is emphasized that the volunteer movements are increasing rapidly and play an important role at the present stage of the society development. The importance of volunteering for the development of a democratic society has been underlined.
