Анотація

Сильвія Плат є канонічною поетесою для американської та британської літератури. Попри те широко відомим є її саме прозовий роман «The Bell Jar», написаний та виданий незадовго перед смертю авторки, 1963 р. Стаття присвячена вивченню лексичного наповнення концепту МОВЧАННЯ в індивідуально-авторському стилі письменниці.
(Sylvia Plath was one of the most dynamic and admired poets of the twentieth century. By the time she took her life at the age of thirty, Plath already had a following in the literary community. In her ensuing years, her work attracted the attention of a multitude of readers, who saw in her singular verse an attempt to catalogue despair, violent emotion, and obsession with death. Sylvia Plath integrated her own personal values, and her own personal life accounts into the autobiographical novel. «The Bell Jar» makes apparent the oppressive force (at least for women) of the model of separative selfhood that dominates patriarchal culture. The semiautobiographical novel deals with depression and suicide, as well as a search for one’s identity, feminism, and rebirth. As Paula Bennett has written, Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar offers a brilliant evocation of «the oppressive atmosphere of the 1950s and the soul-destroying effect this atmosphere could have on ambitious, high-minded young women like Plath» [1]. Plath told the truth in «The Bell Jar» – not only the autobiographical truth, though that was the part of it – but also a larger truth about how emotional suffering can make people feel isolated under their own airless glass jars.)
