Анотація

У статті представлено комплексний аналіз лексико-семантичних та стилістичних засобів репрезентації символічного образу старого будинку на прикладі 13 романів Енн Тайлер. Досліджено роль зазначеного образу в ідейнокомпозиційному оформленні творів. Здійснено контекстуально-інтерпретаційний та функціонально-стилістичний аналізи. Підтверджено роль символічного образу старого будинку в актуалізації категорії художнього часу.
(The article deals with the complex analysis of Anne Tyler’s novels. The material of the study is the author’s 13 works. The research is focusing on the writer’s individual style, namely the peculiarities of the «old house» symbolic image functioning in the text. The contextual interpreting and functional stylistic methods were applied in the analysis. The mentioned symbolic image was detected in all the novels. It is closely related with the symbols of «stairs» and «air». Their role in the artistic time category realization was confirmed as they convey the state of the characters’ temporal consciousness and its changes. The research was conducted on the lexical-semantic, stylistic and structural-compositional levels. On the lexical-semantic level,
the nouns and adjectives that help to represent the symbolic image were distinguished, namely: the nouns with the semes
«ageing», «tranquility»; pejorative adjectives with the meanings «old», «unprepared for change», «cluttered», «neglected», «encumbering the process of breathing» and verbs meaning «ascending», «descending», «slow movement» and «absence of movement». Numerous depicting details create the image of the house where life has stopped and which inhabitants exist in the state of somnambulism. The lexemes «a house» and «a building» are thematic ones as there are complicated relations with them in all Anne Tyler’s novels. On the stylistic level the numerous metaphors, similes and personifications containing «house» related vocabulary were revealed. It was concluded that the lexemes «a house» and «a building» have a stylistic function and that the symbolic image of the old house is an essential part of Anne Tyler’s individual paradigm.)
